Frequently Asked Questions About Voluntary Employee Benefit Individual Medical Insurance

2026-09-21

Q1: Which insurer underwrites this product, and who provides the services?

Voluntary Employee Benefit (VEB) Individual Medical Insurance is underwritten by China Continent Property & Casualty Insurance Company Ltd., with professional services and operational support provided by MSH CHINA. This individual

medical insurance product is available exclusively through the workplace for corporate employees and their families. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in international health insurance services, MSH CHINA is responsible for operational support, the Direct Billing Network and customer service.

Q2: Who is this product suitable for?

The plan is suitable for all employees of companies with MSH Corporate Group Medical Insurance, as well as their spouses, children and parents. Children aged 0–17 can enroll independently. Once a company adopts an MSH group insurance plan, all employees and their families—not only middle and senior managers covered by the group policy—can purchase individual protection at group rates. It is particularly suitable for employees who wish to supplement their families' individual coverage or are concerned about losing coverage after leaving their employer.

Q3: How does this plan differ from other medical insurance?

VEB is an extension of group insurance offered exclusively through the workplace. Its main distinction is portability: coverage can continue to be renewed after leaving employment or retiring, rather than ending when employment ends. This addresses a common limitation of traditional group insurance, which provides protection only during employment. Employees can purchase individual coverage at group rates, and the product accommodates pre-existing conditions, with Plans 2 and 3 covering conditions approved after review. Its three options range from entry-level premiums of a few hundred RMB to top-tier coverage costing around RMB 10,000, allowing members to choose according to their budget.

Q4: What does the product cover?

The three plans offer different coverage. Plan 1 is cancer-only insurance, reimbursing only cancer-related medical expenses, including carcinoma in situ and mild and severe malignant tumors. It includes routine cancer-related outpatient care by default, with an annual limit of RMB 50,000, and covers inpatient treatment, a cancer hospitalization allowance, outpatient surgery and travel expenses for treatment in another location. Plan 2 (mid-market) and Plan 3 (high-end) cover all illness categories, including inpatient treatment and Day-care Treatment; Special Outpatient Treatment such as kidney dialysis, outpatient treatment of malignant tumors, outpatient surgery and emergency dental care; emergency medical transportation; and travel expenses for treatment in another location. Routine outpatient coverage is optional. An optional supplementary wellness package also allows members to choose among health checkups, vaccinations, dental care and eye care.

Q5: Where can I receive medical treatment?

Plans 1 and 2 cover mainland China; Plan 3 covers mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Plans 1 and 2 cover public hospital General Departments, VIP Departments and International Departments, as well as designated private medical institutions. Plan 3 covers public hospital General Departments, VIP Departments and International Departments and private medical institutions, excluding High Cost Providers. MSH Network Hospitals offer Direct Billing without an upfront cash payment. For hospitalization outside MSH's contracted Direct Billing Network, designated MSH service personnel can visit the hospital to make Advance Payment following Pre-Authorization.

Q6: What are the key features?

Key features of VEB include: exclusive workplace access, with employees purchasing individual protection at group rates; portable coverage that can be retained after leaving employment or retiring; three options—cancer-only, mid-market and high-end—with premiums ranging from a few hundred RMB to around RMB 10,000 for the top tier; accommodation of pre-existing conditions, with Plans 2 and 3 covering conditions approved after review; access to public hospital VIP Departments and International Departments under all three plans; independent enrollment for children aged 0–17; flexible family enrollment with a 5% discount for two members and 10% for three or more; and a 24/7 bilingual Chinese and English Call Center, dedicated customer service, a Second Medical Opinion, MSH Hospital Representatives, a Pharmacy Direct Billing Service, psychological assistance and online health consultation.

Q7: What are the coverage limits and indicative premiums?

The annual maximum is RMB 3 million for Plan 1 and RMB 5 million for both Plans 2 and 3. For Plan 1 cancer-only coverage with a RMB 10,000 deductible, illustrative annual premiums are approximately RMB 272 for ages 18–24, RMB 340 for ages 30–34, RMB 621 for ages 45–49 and RMB 1,360 for ages 60–64. For ages 0–1, inpatient-only coverage with a RMB 10,000 deductible costs approximately RMB 2,190 per year under Plan 2 and RMB 4,151 under Plan 3; Plan 2 inpatient plus outpatient coverage with a RMB 10,000 deductible costs approximately RMB 7,007 per year. The optional supplementary wellness package with a RMB 1,000 benefit limit costs RMB 735 for adults and RMB 660 for children. Premiums are payable in a single installment.

Q8: What additional services are available?

Additional services include: Direct Billing at MSH Network Hospitals and Advance Payment by designated personnel at Out-of-Network providers; a 24/7 bilingual Chinese and English Call Center and dedicated customer service; a Second Medical Opinion, MSH Hospital Representatives, a Pharmacy Direct Billing Service, psychological assistance and online health consultation; fast-track access to inpatient surgery; family enrollment discounts; and portable coverage after leaving employment or retiring.
