Winter Time: How to Protect Your Skin?

Back to list 2020-02-10 12:05:49

During wintertime, the cold weather is tough on our skin. Low temperatures mixed with low humidity levels from both indoors and outdoors result in dry air that draws moisture away from the skin. This dry winter air and dry indoor heat lead to cracked, flaky and even in some case bleeding skin.  Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may also see their symptoms increase during these cold and dry months.

However, there are many easy ways to prevent the causes of dry winter skin and keep your skin moisturized all season long such as not taking a too hot shower, for example. Discover 4 tips to protect your skin during winter.

Don’t Overheat Your Home

Central heat can make the air in your house even drier. Set up your thermostat to a comfortable temperature between 19° to 21°C.

Avoid Long and Hot Shower

When it’s chilly outside, it might be tempting to take a long, hot shower but it can deprive your skin of important oils. A 5 to 10 minute lukewarm shower is much better for your skin and recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Use a Humidifier

At home or at the office, this will add extra moisture to the dry winter air. Moisture in the air will help keep your skin hydrated.

Moisturize More

The outdoors’ dry cold air coupled with the indoors’ dry warm air are the main factors of skin dryness during winter.

Apply a moisturizer ideally after bathing or after washing your hands. This helps plug the spaces between your skin cells and seal in moisture while your skin is still damp.

If you still experience dryness and irritation after trying these tips, we suggest you talking to a dermatologist for personalized advice.
