Care for Your Thyroid

2013-04-01 15:33:40

The location of the thyroid gland: Enclosed in a membrane, the thyroid gland has two lobes which are located in the lower part of the thyroid cartilage, on both sides of the trachea(windpipe) and attached to one another by the isthmus. Usually isthmus reaches upward a pyramidal lobe which is connected to the tongue bone. Behind the two lobes of the thyroid gland and between two layers of capsule, normally there are 4 parathyroid glands. The two superior parathyroid glands are fixed in the junction of upper third and central third of the back of the thyroid gland while the two inferior parathyroid glands are unfixed but mostly in the posterior location behind the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is bound to the trachea and annular cartilage by the outer membrane and hung on the annular cartilage by suspensory ligaments on the inside of the thyroid gland. Thus, when one swallows, the thyroid gland moves up and down along with the motion.

The function of the thyroid gland: the thyroid gland is the largest endocrine organ in the body and its main function is the synthesis, storage and secretion of thyroid hormones and the regulation of the rate of metabolism. Adequate thyroid hormones are required throughout the growth of fetuses, infants and teenagers, so the thyroid gland is worthy of our protection and care. However, people seldom pay attention to the thyroid in real life, and it is also not included in physical examinations organized by employers

Dysfunction of the thyroid gland: hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are common diseases that appear with obvious symptoms, and are easily treated, while Thyroid nodules and early thyroid cancer, also common diseases, often appear with no symptoms at all. According to statistics at home and abroad, the rate of thyroid nodules detected by palpation is 3%-7% and 20%-76% by High resolution B-mode ultrasound. Generally, the rate of thyroid cancer among thyroid nodules is 5%-15%. Therefore, Thyroid checks are necessary even if there are not observable symptoms. In particular, physical examination by specialists in thyroid and High resolution B-mode ultrasound are of great significance in differentiating between the benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Statistics show that 90% of thyroid cancer is differentiated thyroid cancer which, if detected at an early stage and treated in time, would have a better prognosis with a high survival rate(sometimes as high as 90%) in 10 to 20 years.

Care and love for thyroid: White-collar workers are prone to thyroid dysfunction if they adopt a poor sitting position and lack exercise for a long time. If you easily get angry, feel constantly anxious or tired, you may have some problems with your thyroid. Therefore, you should pay attention to your personality and temper and see a specialist in endocrinology to check your thyroid if anything goes wrong.

While exercising, you should also knead your thyroid to stimulate its blood circulation which will adjust secretion of your thyroid hormones, relax your body, raise your spirit and gradually change your hot temper.
