During summer, the average temperature in Shanghai is around 30℃. With humidity level of up to 90%, it can definitely make the temperature feels like way hotter than it actually is. The sultry weather of the last few days has been particularly oppressive and you’re probably wondering how to stay cool other than just having your AC turned up all night and day.

Heat and humidity are not only uncomfortable but can also be pretty dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions. MSH China has therefore found some easy tips and tricks that can help you beat the heat this summer.

1. CHANGE THE LIGHTS

Did you know that 90% of the energy produced by an incandescent bulb is heat? This extra heat added to the ambient warm temperature in your home surely doesn’t help during the dog days.

The solution? Change to fluorescent lights or LED lamp.

2. DRINK WATER

When you’re hydrated, your body feels cooler. It’s also important to drink more water since you’re sweating much more.

3. KEEP THE HEAT OUT

When the sun is out, you should keep the windows closed and curtains down to avoid the heat to penetrate your house.

4. A FAN

To increase the benefits of a fan, you can place frozen water bottles in front of it. This way you create a natural air conditioner.

5. MUNG BEAN JUICE

Chinese people drink green bean juice warm. Despite it might sounds counterintuitive to drink hot beverages during summer, it’s a traditional way used to keep your body from overheating. The hot beverage indicate to your body to cool down.

6. WATERMELON

Watermelon is a refreshing and high water content fruit that will definitely help you to cool down and stay hydrated.

7. NATURAL MATERIALS

At home you may stay indefinitely under the air conditioning to avoid the heat but at some point most of us have to go to work and go outdoor when the temperatures are close to 40℃. Before going outside, you should check the weather and consider what kind of clothes fabrics to wear. Some natural materials allow better air circulation which makes heat more bearable.

Cotton, linen, chambray, blends and silk are highly recommended during this sultry weather.

8. PULSE POINTS

There are many pulse points around the feet, ankles, wrist and neck. You can for example run cold water for 10 seconds on each of your wrist or wrap a wet towel around your neck for 30 minutes to one hour, which may help to cool down your body temperature.

9. EAT LIGHTER AND CHILLED MEAL

Salads, chilled soup, ice cream, fruits and vegetables that are rich in water content are especially recommended during heat wave. Chilled food won’t add extra heat to your digestive system nor your body.

10. UNPLUG

Even when not in use, plugged computer and many other electronic devices still produce heat. By unplugging these idling electronic devices not only can you remove extra heat sources, but can also lower your energy bill at the same time.
